2013 Annual Spring Awards

Instructions for Applicants

Celebrating  the Achievements of Women Returning to Education

Please read these instructions carefully and consult descriptions and criteria of these awards on the reverse of this sheet.

 

Application forms may be picked up at the Ban Righ Centre, 32 Bader Lane, beginning February 4, 2013 (Hours are Monday to Friday 9:00-4:00). 

 

 Applications are due back at the Ban Righ Centre on March 7, 2013 by 3:30 pm.  No late applications will be accepted.

 

Award recipients will be notified by March 30, 2012. Awards will be presented to recipients at a public ceremony at Wallace Hall (JDUC) on Thursday May 2, 2013 from 7:00-9:00 pm. There is a reception for recipients and donors before at 5:30 at the Ban Righ Centre. We encourage you to invite family and friends.   Recipients are invited to say a few words upon acceptance of their awards.

 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS:

You may apply for any awards for which you are eligible (see reverse). Your application package must consist of the following:

 

1. A completed financial bursary application (attached). Primary consideration will be given to financial need.

2. An up-to-date print out of your marks (SOLUS)

3. A SOLUS printout of your enrollment.

4. Proof of your OSAP/OSBP, Queen’s and/or other funding (ie SOLUS and/or OSAP/OSBP)

5. One brief letter of support from someone who knows you well (preferably no close relatives).

6. One brief letter of self-nomination. Please include your name, program, student #, and year of study. ****Barbara Paul Prize applicants must submit one letter of support from faculty and one from a colleague from campus or community as well as the letter of self-nomination.

 

Here are some suggestions regarding the content of your self-nomination letter:

An outline of your educational/career, and/or personal goals.

Some of your personal experiences regarding your educational/personal path.

Challenges or barriers you have faced and the people, things or events that have been helpful or have given you encouragement along the way. You may wish to close by describing how you would benefit were you the recipient of this award. ** Please consider that your letter of nomination will appear (perhaps in edited form) in the Spring Celebration Program Booklet should you be chosen as the recipient for an award.

7. You must indicate by checking on the appropriate boxes on the reverse of this sheet, which bursary or bursaries you are applying for based on your eligibility.

** ‘Mature women students’  refers to female students who have been away from formal education for at least one year and/or have children.

THE ELIZABETH WALLACE BURSARY- Established by the Queen's Women's Association (founded 1939 as the Faculty Women's Club) in honour of Elizabeth Wallace, wife of Queen's University Principal R.C. Wallace, and awarded on the basis of financial need to student(s) in their first year of study at the University. Approx. value $400.00.

 

MARIAN WEBB AWARD-The capital is to be held in trust by Queen's University and the income earned thereon to be used for bursary assistance to women students over the age of 25 years. Preference is to be given to a woman who is either a landed immigrant in Canada or is the daughter of a landed immigrant. Approx. Value $1100.00.

 

THE BARBARA PAUL MEMORIAL AWARD- Established in memory of Effie Barbara Paul (Paithouski), B.A. '74 (Carleton) by her son, N. Joseph Paithouski, B.A. '79, B.Sc. (Eng.) '80, and awarded to a student 25 years of age or older. The student(s) should be nearing the completion of their academic work and combining family and/or employment and/or other responsibilities with academic studies. Preference will be given to a woman. The purpose of the award is to help the student complete their studies. Approx. value $590.00.

 

THE BARBARA PAUL PRIZE- Established in memory of Effie Barbara Paul (Paithouski) B.A. '74 (Carleton) by her son, N. Joseph Paithouski, B.A. '79, B.Sc. (Eng.) '80. The Prize is a medallion awarded to a graduating student with good academic standing who is completing a degree on a full-time or part-time basis while combining family and/or employment and/or other responsibilities and has had barriers to overcome. Preference will be given to a woman. Please include personal and academic information and letters of support from faculty and colleagues from the university and/or the community. The selection of the recipient of the medallion will be made by the Board of the Ban Righ Foundation for Continuing University Education. No monetary component.

 

THE MILDRED BLACKADDER/ZONTO CLUB OF KINGSTON BURSARY Must meetOSOTFI requirements.Please see attached definition.Established by the Zonta Club of Kingston in memory of Mildred Blackadder and awarded to an aboriginal student (or split between two) on the basis of financial need. Selection will be made in consultation with the Student Awards Office. Approx. total value $950.00

 

THE HELEN RICHARDS CAMPBELL AWARD- Must meet OSOTF Irequirements Established by the Campbell family in memory of Helen Richards Campbell, who graduated from Queen's in 1978 at the age of 81. Awarded to a female student on the basis of financial need who has completed at least one year of university work, having returned to school after an absence of three or more years. The selection of the candidate will be made by the Director of the Ban Righ Centre for Continuing University Education in consultation with the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards). Approx value $1650.00.

 

THE DIANE MCKENZIE AWARD Must meet OSOTF I requirements.Please see attached definition.Established by Diane McKenzie, B.N.Sc. 1964, MPA 1992, to honour Dr. Jean Hill, Dean of Nursing 1968-1977, and awarded annually on the recommendation of the Ban Righ Foundation for Continuing Education for Women to any undergraduate student on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students in the School of Nursing. Two awards are available. Approx value each $850.00

 

THE TROUP-BALLANTYNE FUND –Must meet OSOTF II requirements. Please see attached definition. Established by Mary Ballantyne in honour of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Wallace Troup, and in support of female students returning to University education. Awarded to a student on the basis of financial need and academic merit, with preference to a student in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The selection of the student will be made in consultation with the Director of the Ban Righ Centre. Approx value $1450.00

 

THECAROLE KINNEAR BURSARY – Must meetOSOTF Irequirements. Please see attached definition. Established by J. Paul Kinnear, B.Com. 1963, in honour of his wife's graduation from the Faculty of Arts and Science in May 1998. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit to a woman who, after an interruption in her formal education, is beginning or returning to University studies. Preference will be given to a student completing a degree in Women's Studies. Selection will be made by the Ban Righ Foundation for Continuing University Education in consultation with the Student Awards Office. Approx value $950.00

 

THE DOROTHY MATHESON PARNELL BURSARY-established by Dorothy Matheson Parnell, B.A., 1940, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a mature student in any year or program of study at Queen’s University, with a preference given to single mothers. Two awards are available. Approx value $1000.00 each.

 

BARBARA SCHLAFER BOOK PRIZE -Established by friends of the Ban Righ Centre, co-workers at Queen’s University and by Barb Schlafer’s family and friends, to honour the work Barb has done over the course of nearly thirty years at the Ban Righ Centre. The gift is awarded to a female student who is studying at Queen’s University and who would benefit from an opportunity to extend her learning through reading. Approx. value $150.00

Established by the Zonta Club of Kingston in memory of Mildred Blackadder and awarded to an aboriginal student on the basis of financial need. Selection will be made in consultation with the Four Directions Aboriginal Centre. $1214.00

THE HELEN RICHARDS CAMPBELL AWARD

Established by the Campbell family in memory of Helen Richards Campbell, who graduated from Queen's in 1978 at the age of 81. Awarded to a female student on the basis of financial need who has completed at least one year of university work, having returned to school after an absence of three or more years. THE CAROLE KINNEAR AWARD

Established by J. Paul Kinnear, B.Com. 1963, in honour of his wife's graduation from the Faculty of Arts and Science in May 1998. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit to a woman who, after an interruption in her formal education, is beginning or returning to University studies. Preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in Women's Studies. Selection will be made by the Ban Righ Foundation for Continuing University Education in consultation with the Student Awards Office.  Approx. Value:  $1114.00

THE DOROTHY MATHESON PARNELL BURSARY

Established by Dorothy Matheson Parnell, B.A., 1940, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a mature student in any year or program of study at Queen's University, with a preference given to single mothers.  Can be awarded to the same person for 2 consecutive years.   Approx. Value:  $1000.00

 

 

THE BARBARA SCHLAFER BOOK PRIZE

The Barbara Schlafer Book Prize was established by colleagues and friends on the occasion of Barbara Schlafer’s retirement from Queen's University to honour her many years of valued service and commitment to the Ban Righ Foundation.

For more than 30 years, Barbara Schlafer has helped to open a door to opportunity for women striving to fulfill their dreams of a university degree that promises a better life for themselves and their families.

 Barb’s life experience, knowledge, wisdom, warmth, compassion and quiet humour have influenced every aspect of the Ban Righ Centre and her numerous awards for outstanding leadership are a testament to her commitment to ‘people before paper’.

At the Ban Righ Centre, Barb has nurtured a sense of belonging, safety and kinship for everyone who crosses the threshold and she has encouraged the hopes and aspirations of hundreds of students and friends of the Centre. We are all grateful for her gentle strength and sound advice. 

Barb leaves a solid legacy, ensuring the continued success of women attending Queen’s University.
